Day 1

A guide for navigating an election year in your faith community

Early in January 2024, our team at Vandersall Collective engaged in conversations around the upcoming presidential election. Initially, each of us noted our discomfort with talking about what might happen in November. Naming our feelings helped us to begin naming what we learned from previous election experiences and ways we could begin to prepare for what was ahead.

Day 1: Journal

A companion journal for navigating an election year

Adapted from our Day 1 curriculum, the companion journal is designed to support people of faith doing this reflective work independently.

Fundraising within Christian Communities of Color

In 2015 Project Resource was created as a collaborative initiative between the College of Bishops, Development Office of the Episcopal Church, and the Episcopal Church Foundation to train diocesan teams from across the Episcopal Church on effective fundraising strategies rooted in a deep theology of giving.

Disrupting Institutional Racism in Fundraising

This webinar will explore how the Collective Foundation is collaborating with Christians of color to address this research deficit. Larissa and Erin will be joined by the Rev. Kymberley Clemons-Jones, a participant in one of the research gatherings, who will share her reflections on the impact of this work as a faith leader.

Claiming Justice in the Congregation

Two vibrant voices for justice and reconciliation—the Reverend Dr. Derrick McQueen and Erin Weber-Johnson—bring their perspectives on grounded, effective social justice campaigns to a one hour webinar. Claiming both the wounds and the triumphs of their own faith journey, these two leaders share their insights about what allows social justice work to be authentic and resonant across a range of congregational settings from Harlem to the Midwest.

Publications

  • Pathways to Belonging

Pathways to Belonging is an invitation to an experience of community, connection, and meaning. We need belonging as much as we need air to fill our lungs. But alienation, isolation, and distrust are the everyday markers of our lives--including our faith communities. The twenty-two contributors in this book offer an engaging path forward, inviting readers to the promise and peril of Christian belonging.

  • Crisis & Care: Meditations on Faith and Philanthropy

A deadly pandemic. Civic unrest. Economic uncertainty. The years between the 2016 and 2020 Presidential Elections exposed the vulnerability of our institutions--and ourselves--like never before. In the wake of uncertainty, the authors in this volume offer wisdom to make sense of the changes brought by these past four years. Reflecting how faith and philanthropy converge, they imagine alternative economies for faith communities, academia, and nonprofits, while also marking the unshakable encounter with grief and crisis.

  • Radical Collect

We’ve been calling it a zine, but it far exceeds the traditional notion of one, with 100+ high-quality pages brimming with beautiful words, images, and prompts. Many thanks to our contributors who thoughtfully reflected on the theme of Turning with their creativity, photographs, essays, and art.

To everything there is a season, filled with turning—turning up, on, in, over; turning the page, turning over a new leaf… This zine/workbook allows our contributors and you, our readers, to consider the turning that’s affecting our shared life, in this season of particular challenges and change.
